Craft beer has exploded in popularity in British Columbia to the point where even small towns like Nelson can be home to several breweries.
Nelson Brewing Company has been at this the longest starting in 1991 while Torchlight has made a good name for themselves in the past couple of years. Now Backroads Brewing joins the list of the town's breweries with a nicely revamped space on Baker Street, the town's main drag.
While they're brewing a Saison, Kellerbier, Pale Ale, and Irish Red Ale at the moment, the Pale Ale wins for my palate. I also like the multi-drink friendly 4.5 ABV.
The owners were on hand doing the work here and were welcoming and ecstatic to be open. Making your way between Torchlight and Backroads for a mini-beer tour of Nelson seems like a wise strategy for a post-ride afternoon in the Kootenays.
